Introducing the car that can drive itself

March 17, 2014

Able to calculate 2.5 million measurements every second, Ford’s automated research car uses four infrared light sensors to generate a real-time 3D map that experts say provides a more comprehensive image than any human driver ever could.

The car, which bounces infrared light off everything within roughly 70 metres – including vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists – will play a significant role in the testing of advanced and automated technologies after first being revealed in Europe at Mobile World Congress.
