Mums and dads will soon be able to keep the kids happy on even the longest car journeys with a smartphone app featuring stories by Roald Dahl – including “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.
The story, which has spawned a hit musical, an opera and two major movie adaptations starring Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp respectively as the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka, is among 19 tales that feature on the Roald Dahl Audiobooks app.
Together with Penguin we are updating the existing Roald Dahl iOS app to enable drivers to voice control the app using our in-car communication system Ford SYNC with AppLink.
The partnership extends a range of apps that enable drivers to stay connected to their favourite entertainment and services while keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.
As well as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” families will be able to listen to other favourite Roald Dahl stories including “James and the Giant Peach,” “Matilda” and “The Twits.” Among the narrators are Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet, TV presenter Stephen Fry, and comedian David Walliams.
Drivers will be able to navigate hands-free through the audiobooks via voice control or alternatively operate the app through controls on the steering wheel. They will also be able to resume stories where they left off – bookmarking their current position when they leave the vehicle.
The first chapter of each Roald Dahl book is available free with the app, and the full stories are available for download.
