Accelerated development

We may live in the age of super-fast broadband, instant noodles and speed dating, but it can still come as a surprise how much you can achieve in just 5 seconds.

Mustang 4.8seconds

Take our new Ford Mustang with a 5.0-litre V8 engine – which we’ve just announced will get you from 0-62 mph in what might be the most exciting 4.8 seconds of your day.

And our new Mustang isn’t just fast in a straight line. Clever new suspension, a stiff body and lightweight parts such as aluminium panels for the V8 and the more fuel-efficient 2.3-litre EcoBoost model mean it’s quick around corners to.

In fact, it can deliver 0.97 g-force through the bends – pinning you to the side of the seat with almost the same force as gravity would pull you towards the ground if you jumped from an aeroplane.

We know Mustang drivers will want to check this out for themselves on track, so we’ve built Mustang with a package of Track Apps. Drivers can record how fast they accelerate, how hard they corner, and how quickly the stop. They can also choose different Drive Modes, which adjust Mustang’s performance to suit conditions from the track to driving in the rain or snow.

V8 Mustang models get a Launch Control feature that holds the revs and controls rear wheel spin for super-fast getaways, and a U.S.-style Line Lock for warming up the rear tyres on the drag-strip.

The new Mustang is the fastest accelerating Ford that you can buy in Europe since the previous Ford GT supercar in 2005. Only a handful of GTs were ever built for a few customers though, whereas we’ve now started making Mustangs for Europe in our Flat Rock factory in the U.S., which will be arriving for customers in the U.K. from October.
