Crashing into a lake would usually put paid to most people’s travel plans.
But one rally team managed to get their Ford Fiesta race car back on the road – and back in the race – just hours after it ended up in the water.
The drama occurred during the Rally Mexico when driver Ott Tänak’s Ford Fiesta RS WRC plunged down an embankment – and into the lake.
Tänak and co-driver Raigo Mõlder swam to safety, the team worked against the clock to restore the car to a race-worthy state, and the pair finished 22nd (of 35) overall.
“The work the boys did to get Ott’s car to the end of the rally was nothing short of phenomenal,” said M-Sport World Rally Team Principal Malcolm Wilson OBE.
Based on Europe’s best-selling small car, the team’s Ford Fiesta RS WRC rally car will be back in action next month when it competes in the Rally Argentina – an event famous for deep water splashes.
